Routine decontamination method

See also Feeding bottles

Discard single-use disposable bottles and teats after each use. For reusable equipment, after each use, clean all bottles and related equipment with warm water and detergent using a bottlebrush, and rinse all items thoroughly. Make sure you remove all traces of milk and debris before sterilising the equipment by using an appropriate ‘sterilising’ solution (e.g. 500 ppm available chlorine for 30 minutes).

When using ‘sterilising’ solution:

  • submerge the equipment in an appropriate ‘sterilising’ solution
  • make sure there is no air trapped in the equipment
  • leave the equipment in the ‘sterilising’ solution for at least 30 minutes
  • prepare fresh solution every 24 hours or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Additional recommendations

Steam or microwave sterilisers are available. Always wash your hands before removing items from the steriliser and take care when handling any equipment that may be hot. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and adhere to local procedures and policies.
